Radio consultant and engineer Ian Hickling has passed away

Ian Hickling, who was a radio consultant, engineer and owner of Transplan UK, has died at the age of 85 following an illness.
From Irthlingborough, Ian served as a Flying Officer with the Royal Airforce between 1958 and 2005.
He set up Transplan UK in 1987 to explore and promote all aspects of radio, specialising in transmission and launching stations. The company also advised on the legal and financial aspects of the industry.
At the beginning of April, Ian posted on his Facebook profile, via his daughter Ellie: “I have a terminal and incurable condition for which I now have a better analysis and over which I can have control over my irritation and pain.
“My sole objective now is for quality of life for my friends, professional and personal, for my family and for me.
“The aim is for a completely anonymous cremation for my remains at minimum cost and no ceremony.”
Revolution Radio announced the sad news today, saying: “It’s with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Ian Hickling, co-founder of Revolution Radio, aged 85.
“Ian’s passion for radio began back in the 1950s when he first tuned in to foreign stations on his parents’ bakelite radio. That spark turned into a lifetime of innovation, dedication and incredible support for the world of broadcasting.
“As one half of the Transplan partnership, Ian helped power over 100 community radio stations across the UK with his unrivalled knowledge of transmission systems. His impact on Revolution Radio – and so many others – was immeasurable.
“We are forever grateful for Ian’s vision, expertise and friendship. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire.
“Rest in peace, Ian. You’ll always be part of the Revolution.”
