AudioUK remains concerned over BBC’s UK podcast advertising move

AudioUK says it remains concerned about the BBC’s entry into the UK podcast advertising market.
A statement has been released following the BBC’s announcement last week that it will not pursue podcast advertising on licence fee-funded content in the UK.
AudioUK, representing independent podcast and audio producers, acknowledged the BBC’s decision while highlighting the importance of fair opportunities for independent creators, and remains strong supporters of the corporation and its vital role within the UK’s podcast and audio industry ecosystem.
Their statement includes: “We remain concerned about the BBC’s entry into the UK podcast advertising market through content produced by the BBC Studios.
“One year on from the launch of the BBC Studios dedicated audio unit, our initial concerns about its inclusion in the UK market have not been alleviated.
“While the BBC has stated in its Annual Plan that it will not carry advertising on licence fee-funded content, the presence of a commercially powerful, BBC-owned entity in the podcasting ad space continues to raise significant concerns.
AudioUK has called for further discussions with the BBC to explore collaborative opportunities that benefit independent producers.
CEO Chloe Straw emphasised the importance of maintaining a balanced market, ensuring that new developments in the industry support existing businesses and foster sustainable growth.
