Ten-year-old Fun Kids listener crowned first ever Young Astronomer

Fun Kids has crowned its first ever Young Astronomer, with 10-year-old Federica Plewa-Baici taking the title.
The competition, run in partnership with the Royal Observatory Greenwich, celebrates young talent in astronomy.
Federica impressed a panel of experts, including astronomers from the Observatory and Fun Kids Science Weekly host Dan Simpson, with her presentation on the Sun and red dwarf stars. Her knowledge and humour won over the judges, earning her the top spot.
“I’ve worked so hard for this and it’s the honour of my life,” said Federica after her win.
The final, held at the Royal Observatory on 1st March, saw three finalists deliver space-themed presentations before enjoying an exclusive tour and Q&A with astronomers. As part of their prize, Federica and her fellow finalists, seven-year-old Vidyah and eight-year-old Edward, will become Fun Kids Space Correspondents, contributing to the station’s science coverage.
“Federica’s passion for space is so clear! She’s got a bright future ahead of her,” said Fun Kids Breakfast Show presenter George Butler.
The competition marks the 350th anniversary of the first Royal Astronomer, kicking off six months of celebrations across Royal Museums Greenwich before they close for renovations in Autumn 2025.
